Still Life #6
22" sq
gouache on w/c paper

To enter into a still life, is to enter that place of stillness.  A place that is absent of sound or noise; hush, noiselessness, quiet, quietness, silence, soundlessness, mute, stillness.  For the artist, it is to become calm and focused.  The still life is about the act of seeing.  Though the artist begins with symbols that refer to the material world, what is seen in the final work are shapes rearranged, created with hard edges, and flat color, and careful gradations.

"We work in the dark, We do what we can, We give what we have, Our doubt is our passion, And our passion is our task, The rest is the madness of art."                                                 --Henry James
